THE LEGEND OF THE DEAD MAN’S HAND

In the saloons of the old west, poker was the favorite cowboy game. One of the legendary Cowboy Marshals was Wild Bill Hickock. Wild Bill was sitting at a table in Deadwood, South Dakota and had drawn two black pair of “aces and eights” - we are still trying to determine the fifth card and if it was a full house or a pair, but that’s another story! One of his old nemeses took advantage of the moment, slipped behind Wild Bill and shot him in the back. Today we refer to “aces and eights” as The Dead Man’s Hand.
In order of credibility, the following kickers have been suggested:

Five of Diamonds

The actual card is supposedly on display in Deadwood, previously on display at the Stardust in Las Vegas.

Nine of Diamonds

Listed below in the glossary, this card was supposedly reported by first hand accounts, and is used in a recreation in Deadwood.

Queen of Clubs

On display at Ripley's Believe it or Not.

King of Spades

Appeared in the 1936 movie The Plainsman with Gary Cooper as Hickock.

THE LEGEND OF THE LOST DUTCHMAN MINE

Mystery still surrounds the old Lost Dutchman, Jacob Waltz. Jacob was supposed to have found an old Spanish mine, filled with gold, in the Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction, Arizona.
It is said that he killed anyone foolish enough to try to learn his secret. After his death, in the early 1890s, his secret was buried with him, creating quite a stir.
Forgotten for some thirty years, Dr. Adolph Ruth arrived at Apache Junction in the 1930s, claiming to have a map of the mine. An elderly man in poor health, Dr. Ruth ventured into the mountains one hot summer day and was never seen alive again. Several months later, his skull was found with what looked like a bullet hole in it.
After the word of his fate spread around the country, gold seekers, soothsayers, and would be millionaires came from all over, searching for the fabulous lode. To this day, no one has found the famous treasure and the mystery still lives on.

THE LEGEND OF THE BEGINNING

In the beginning, The People looked for a far away place which would one day be their home. The Mudheads came from a distant land in the south. Their leaders took the people through the jungles of Palenque to the islands of Tenochticlan where they lived for a period of time.
One thousand years later, the people moved into Northern Mexico and settled down in the land of the Ho-ho-kam. As the climate changed, the people traveled north and for a while became the Sin Agua and were later referred to as the Anasazi (Anasazi is the Apache and Navajo word for ancient enemy).
The distant mountains on the western frontier of the sacred Hopi Lands are today called the San Francisco Peaks. The adventure continued as the people formed clans and today we call these clans the Hopi. Hopi Land is not just a place or a destination ... it is really the story of a journey.
